Design of inclusive Internet applications for LGBTQIA+ users

For my master’s thesis, I chose a topic that is deeply personal to me, as I have firsthand experience with internet applications that are not particularly inclusive of queer individuals. Even in 2025, Norway is not entirely safe for queer people, and many continue to face invisibility in various aspects of society. The internet plays a crucial role in the lives of queer individuals, often serving as a vital space for self-expression, community, and access to essential resources such as healthcare information, queer history, and representation. However, many websites and applications are designed in ways that unintentionally alienate their queer user base- or, in the worst cases, expose them to discrimination, online harassment and risks of real-life violence. My research explores these challenges and seeks to highlight solutions for creating more inclusive and safer digital environments.

I believe that many HCI designers aspire to create inclusive solutions but may lack the lived experience and specialized knowledge necessary to do so effectively. To address this gap, I am developing a resource designed to support designers in this area- a comprehensive guide outlining key considerations for inclusive design, along with practical implementation strategies. This resource is informed by existing research as well as insights gathered from interviews with queer individuals, ensuring that it reflects real-world experiences and needs.

The thesis has currently completed its data collection fase and analysis. The deadline for the project is 15th of May 2025. My goal is to also pulish my work as an open resource that can be used and improved upon freely. The thesis will also be presentet at Pride @ IFI.

Artistic pursuits

Performance art and costume design are pashions I invest a lot of free time into. I am part of the Haus of Blossom drag collective, and together we produce and perform in several productions each year. In 2024, I peformed at 15 events, at 5 different venues. Our goal has been to create open and safe spaces for our guest artists and audience. Our productions have gained a reputation in the scene as professional and inclusive, attracting both newly established artists and drag royalty to join as guests.

Being able to explore my creative sides freely is essential to me and drag has been a driving force in pushing myself out of my comfort zone and daring to take on big projects while really putting myself out there.
